GAZIANTEP UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF FINE ARTS
1ST INTERNATIONAL LETTER ART EXHIBITION CALL TEXT
It is possible to encounter various names and forms in which Letter Art is created, such as Postal Art, Mail Art etc. Mail Art is an art movement that focuses mostly on postcards, envelopes and small-scale works that can be sent by mail. Mail Art became widespread since the emergence of Ray Johnson's New York Correspondence School in the 1950s and the Fluxus movement in the 1960s.
Letter Art, on the other hand, includes the letter text in the content of the works but also includes non-letter works. Letters are loaded with a wide variety of functions. While private letters provided communication between individuals, official letters were used to share information among government institutions, business letters were used for correspondence of private institutions, and literary / art letters were used to convey the ideas and feelings of artists and thinkers. Today, these requirements are met by e-mail and communication technologies.
In order to eliminate the confusion in the names and to better express what sort of works we want; we have named these works Letter Art. We decided to prepare this exhibition by considering the letters that turned into a nostalgic object as an opportunity to produce art and share them easily. We are impatiently awaiting your pictures, letters written on or around. The pictures, technical and auxiliary materials used do not have to be directly related to the content of the letters.
We look forward to the works of your esteemed artists, art students and those concerned to the Gaziantep University Faculty of Fine Arts 1st International Letter Art Exhibition, the first of which will be held this year and planned to be held traditionally every year.
Thank you in advance for your contribution to our exhibition.
